MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)

MRI has become the radiological investigation that makes it possible to examine most of the anatomical regions, it does not emit ionising radiation, which makes it a very safe and futuristic technology.

What is it?

Magnetic resonance imaging is a modern technology which is based on the use of a high magnetic field in relation to the physical properties of water molecules inside the human body.

MRI therefore differs from conventional radiology in that it does not make use of ionising radiation, thereby providing absolute protection from radiation.

MRI is particularly suitable for the investigation of non-mobile regions such as the brain, vertebral column, joints and the urogenital system.

Preparation

You must bring along the following for your examination:

Procedure

An MRI investigation is non-invasive but relatively long, lasting for at least 25 minutes of effective examination time. It requires total stillness of the region concerned in order to obtain an optimal quality. Therefore, as much as possible, we will take the time to make sure that you are comfortably positioned.

You should make an allowance for at least one hour in our premises (administrative entries, changing clothes, positioning on the examination table and possible discussion with the radiologist).

All metallic objects (watch, jewels, hearing aids and dentures) must be removed in the changing room where a robe and single-use footwear will be given to you.

In order to make the noise of the machine bearable, we will give you Quies rubber foam ear plugs and if you wish, a headset with which you can to listen to your choice of music.

We will constantly monitor you from our workstation and can communicate with you by means of microphones.

You will also have a call button available to you for alerting us in case there is any cause for concern.

Depending on the indication, it is possible that the radiologist may request for the injection of Gadolinium (by intravenous route) shortly before the end of the investigation, in order to enhance the contrast of the images.

You may request for a break at any given time during the investigation.

Your wellbeing is our concern.

Results

After the investigation, the radiologist will discuss with you if you wish. We will give you internet access which will make it possible for you to visualise the images and read the medical report.

The diagnosis will be transmitted to the prescribing physician who will receive a detailed report by fax or telephone as from the following day.

In future, you will also be able to request for the report as well as the images for up to 10 years after your investigation.

Our machines

The Versoix imaging centre is equipped with the latest generation of MRI equipment.

Without any iota of doubt, the Ambition S from Philips is currently the highest performing machine on the 1.5-Tesla MRI market. Its Blue Seal magnet was designed to work with an infinitesimally small amount of Helium, which meets the exigencies of current environmental issues.

The Ambient Experience system provides a fantastic room environment thanks to themes of mural projections and a ceiling display. Endowed with a large bore of 70 cm diameter with a short magnet, this MRI machine provides patients with comfort and reduces the causes of anxiety and claustrophobia.

Multiple integrated functions make it possible to perform high quality investigations that meet the request of your treating physician.
